30 minutes

There is so much to do to prepare the house for AirBnB guests that I am paralyzed most night by the sheer length of my to-do list. It’s hard to stop reading my book to get stuff done.

I tell myself 30 minutes. Just do one thing for 30 minutes. If I purge stuff, or write the home guide, or organize the closets, or deep clean the window sills for just 30 minutes each night, in a month I will have 14 hours of work done.

30 minutes feel manageable, and productive, so I’m starting there. I can always find 30 minutes, and I’m always thankful when I’ve spent 30 minutes tackling something on my list.

Hopefully by the time that final week comes, when I actually have 4-5 hours every day to dedicate to the house, I won’t be so overwhelmed.

  1. Good for you! Frankly given your schedule finding 30 minutes a day is a real push agenda but you are right that it will make a huge difference.
As a BnB guest I care about clean floors and kitchens, bathrooms being clean and clean bedding. Deep cleaning window sills would not be on my list. I travel with children so having books and toys without small parts is a bonus. Playdough and crayons and glue and puffy markers and other things that can cause destruction, if adults do not happen to supervise, are not needed.
Put locks on closets and drawers you do not want opened. OR consider putting lots of stuff in short term storage location off-site. Emptier really has advantages.
Sounds like you will have several sets of people ~ get a cleaning service lined up for cleaning between these sets.
Map with closest Muni stops and where train/buses go is helpful. Closest reasonable grocery store and target/Walreens/CVS type store also helps.
Sounds like you are still going on trip (Or you have rented home and all 4 of you will be staying with your in-laws)! Fingers crossed. Good wishes for final weeks of school!!!!!!!! Thinking of you daily.

    1. I will definitely be moving stuff to my in-laws garage (actually, I have to ask them about this) or to my parents’ garage for the second set of stays (they are also renting their place for the first set because we’ll be in St. Louis together at that time). The reality is, we really don’t have much of any value, honestly. No nice jewelry. The computers will be moved. I’ll have my nice camera. So yeah, I’m not worried about people taking anything. And I’ve checked on the ages of the kids, so I’ll be making the toys they might like accessible.

  2. Fantastic strategy. I don’t know if I have the discipline to do this (actually, scratch that, I know I do not), but its an amazing goal and a great way to do any overwhelming momentous project. One step at a time. I would urge that, at least at first, you MAKE yourself stop at 30 minutes, even if you sort of want to keep going, so that you don’t burn out/lose momentum early.

    1. Ha! That used to be something I’d need to be worried about – once I started I wouldn’t want to stop. But this year, that has NOT been an issue. After 30 minutes, I’m like, SWEET! Now I can read a book! 😉

      1. Hurrah for you!!! That is so important to do as an adult!!!! And so hard for women in particular…. BE GOOD TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
