Amateur Hour

As I predicted I didn’t get to bed until 1am and was up later than I wanted this morning. I did a shit job packing, forgetting a number of important things, like the kids’ headphones, and my meds! (My husband had to overnight them to me.) I’ll be spending much of tomorrow buying the other stuff I forgot.

The whole flight was like amateur hour. I kept making stupid mistakes. My brain was fried and my body was exhausted. It was all just too much.

Clearly leaving the house in decent shape for my husband and a cleaning lady, and making an early flight was too much. I just couldn’t do it all.

I’m glad my Colombia flight is late in the day. I hope I’ve gotten all the bad travel mojo out of my system. Anything is manageable for a 3.5 hours flight, but the mistakes I made today would be awful on a 15 hour international red-eye.

I still need to call and confirm the cleaning lady is even coming (another fail from today), and write a list of things I need my husband to bring. It feels like I’ll never just be able to relax.

  1. Deep breathing. Target. Rest and breath rhythmically and steadily. You survived it all and so did the children. Just keep breathing and sipping on a long and cool.
We are all so proud of you and so impressed.
The adrenaline will begin to fade in your system and that will help. You did this. You achieved amazing things. Breath in and out slowly and then start patting yourself on the back for your amazing accomplishments……. pat til your arm falls off then use the other arm! When it falls off too the self acknowledgement will still be inadequate to what you achieved. Let that reality sink in. BE proud of you!

    1. Well, I never had done it before, and I didn’t realize how hard it would be to take those final steps from almost ready, to actually ready. Making drawers empty was harder than I thought it would be. Storing our bedding was a lot. The final steps were hard, and the early flight made them harder.

I did this because I wanted a reason to get the house in shape. And I needed the money to subsidize my trip. I’ve learned a lot and I’ll have to think hard about whether or not I want to do it again next summer.

  2. You and the kids made it to your destination – that’s the most important thing!

I’m always running around until the last minute pre-departure myself so I’ve pretty much resigned myself to not leaving for trips until later in the day and plan accordingly.

Hope by this point you’ve picked up anything you needed and are firmly in vacation mode!
