Day on the Bay

In December I set up a surprise visit with my husband’s best friend. We met up at a playground in the East Bay and the kids played while the adults talked. My husband has not seen one friend in person since the pandemic started and his mental health has taken a toll. He was so happy to see his friend, and was very thankful that I set up the visit.

During that visit my husband’s friend invited us out on his boat. Since being outside with masks on is something we are doing, we accepted the invitation. We went out this past Sunday and it was amazing.

The weather up here has been warm. REALLY warm. Unseasonably warm. Actually it’s been warm by any-time-of-year standards in SF. We usually get a heatwave like this in February, but not in January. So while it has been amazing to have temperatures in the 70s, it’s also terrifying to think what it portends for the future.

Clear, warm days on the bay are a rarity so we really lucked out. There was so little wind (very rare here) that we had to motor all of the way there and some of the way back. We did put up the sails for a little bit, but mostly we motored. My daughter has been going to sailing camp for two summers now and she really had a great time.

I got a lot of photos. I have to say, I love San Francisco a lot more when I’m a little ways away, marveling at the skyline.

It was a very special day and I’m so grateful we had the opportunity. This definitely will be a highlight of 2021.

  1. Looks like a fantastic day with friends! Glad you were able to make it happen. Those mental health days are more important now than ever!

Also, not to disagree with the very real issue that is global warming, but remember that weather is not the same as climate, so a couple random warm days doesn’t have to mean anything other than some higher power knew ppl needed to feel the warm sun on their faces for a few days! 😉 Hang in there!

  2. SO GLAD you got to do this. It will be a highlight in the year.
Thank you for sharing it with all of us. Lifted my spirits and improved my morale and reminded me of other times in the past. A lovely gift for you …and for us.
I can tell I shall be routinely revisiting these pictures. BIG help and boost.

  3. 1/21/21 Hope your world lightened a fraction this week. There is a long slog and lots of work and no simplistic answers today. No fast stop to the virus and isolation, no improvement in vaccine access as of today. You still have two adults, two children, their grandparents, two jobs, restrictions, contagion worries, education worries, fatigue, all your students. But maybe there is a brighter light of hope.

Sending my support to you and ALL your readers. The idea of compromise and unity and really listening to others, the ending of lies from people who know they are telling lies as they speak……. all sounds good to me. And maybe 9 year olds with visas will stop being separated from their older sibling with a visa and sent to Texas holding camps……. such a vile last action.
Deep breath again. We can move forward holding support for our common humanity.
