Five ways I’m claiming this weird mid-week holiday

I am SO ANNOYED to have Tuesday off this week. It’s making me crazy. I feel like I’ve been robbed of a precious three day weekend and in it’s place I what?… Go to work for one day, then have one day off then go back to work for three days? What even is that? So I’m trying hard to make this day count as a real day off and not just another day to get work done when I’m not being paid to do so.

I made the best of today by having a test in my 1B classes (only two kids were absent) and having the four kids that were absent for the Day of the Dead Assessment make that up during lunch. I really needed it to feel like being at work was actually worth something today.

I met the husband for happy hour drinks and dinner at a sushi spot near his work downtown. We got two drinks each, and stuffed ourselves with sushi and Japanese food for $150 (AFTER tip!) that is a fucking steal in San Francisco. It was so fun to meet up with him for an impromptu dinner downtown. We haven’t met for a meal near his work since the summer.

The 15yo had swim so we timed it to meet her when she was heading home. Usually just the husband waits for her after swim, so she was surprised to see me there. We spent some time walking the long way back to BART so we could appreciate some of the newly hung winter lights. It was fun hanging out, just the three of us, on the way home. Having a little buzz from the dinner drinks didn’t hurt.

All this was possible because the 12yo got picked up from school by his grandparents and went to their house for a sleep over. The husband came home to quickly change, then went to a concert, which means that tonight the 15yo and I can watch Batman Begins and eat furikake popcorn. The 15yo is a relatively new Batman fan, and I have been obsessed for decades, so it will be really fun to share the first movie in the iconic Nolan trilogy with her.

Tomorrow I plan to sleep in. Then I hope to luxuriate in a day with few hard deadlines. I do have to score some test, and do some chores, but I want to take things slow and really relax into the day off. I WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS DAY GOSHDARNIT! Even if they make it basically impossible by putting it on a Tuesday.

Do you get tomorrow off? How are you spending your mid-week day off?

  1. It’s so upsetting that $150 for dinner for two feels like a steal, BUT I HEAR YOU SISTER. I love that you had this treat, and that you had some couple time, and are as we speak having one on one time with your son watching a movie. LOVE.

My husband works for the county, so he has tomorrow off. My daughter and I do not, and do not. Bah. I should ask him to go grocery shopping and do chores. HA! I am not an asshole and will not do this. He should enjoy his weird Tuesday off from work. I hope you sleep in and enjoy your day off, even though you have to get things done.

    1. We had FOUR DRINKS! Drinks are AT LEAST $15, usually closer to $20 in SF. So getting four drinks and a big sushi meal for $150 AFTER tip absolutely felt like a steal. The drinks were only $10 each!

  2. Our schools did a “digital learning day” (independent school work) which – since I still had to work – meant working from home with two kids who needed to be working but just wanted to be on screens. Fun times!

    1. WHAT?! Talk about the worst of all worlds. What is happening here?! I am so, so sorry. I have never heard of such a thing. This day just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

  3. Eleventh hour, eleventh day, eleventh month end of war to end all wars…..was Armistice Day until changed for all vets in 1954. As we moved most other holidays to make 3 day weekends not sure why not move this one too. Winter Holiday of 25th too or would that cause some outrage.
Anyway, glad you plan on sleeping in and limiting work related activities. Hope you get to enjoy the day! The dinner and long walk home sound absolutely wonderful. Wondering why husband escorts swimmer home? Is it safety and darkness?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING, you have no idea how much it means.

    1. My sister and I were SURE that Veterans day was always taken near a weekend (the closest Monday or Friday), and that it changed, but we were googling about it together on the phone yesterday and we could not find any proof of that. I guess it’s the Mandela Effect in action. We were both flummoxed though. I would have bet good money that it used to be tethered to the nearest weekend (the day we actually got off I mean, I know the historic significance of 11/11 – although evidently Veterans Day was celebrated on the 4th Friday October until Gerald Ford changed that in 1975. So my googling did teach me something, it just didn’t confirm what I suspected.

  4. I don’t eat sushi, so I don’t know – that sounds really expensive. Maybe I should just thank my lucky stars that I don’t eat sushi. Your evening sounds lovely. The day off midweek – weird, but sleeping in midweek also doesn’t sound like torture. 😉

My kids are at 3 different schools and they all had school. Coach had work, because as a PT – he only gets off for July 4th, Christmas, etc. I feel like local schools used to have Veteran’s Day off – not sure why they don’t. I babysit for teachers from different districts and they are all teaching today.

I have Fridays off, and last Friday I slept till 8 am. It was glorious.

    1. I am so confused that a lot of people don’t get today off. I mean at schools. But this is not the first I’m hearing of it. I guess if it has to be between having the day and not having it I’ll take the day! But usually it’s a three day weekend to look forward to in November so this felt like a big downgrade. It’s nice to change my perspective!

  5. Our school eliminated early release and all of the random days off (like Veteran’s Day, MLK, Indigenous People’s Day, etc) probably 7 years ago, and I LOOOOOOVE it. They consolidated days off into full weeks off at various times throughout the year instead (so most families here do little vacations instead), and then when kids are school on “official holidays,” lessons are all focused around that person/event that day so kids actually learn about the reason for the day. It’s been a great change!

PS – your date night sounds fantastic!

  6. Honestly, it sounds like you already started making the most of the holiday by having such a fun Monday date night and Batman movie night. Hope your actual day off felt restful!

  7. So, you did it right- the key to really making the most of a day off is to start the day before, as soon as work is over. You did a lot on Monday! I definitely hope you were able to relax today. My daughter had the day off today, but my husband didn’t (he teaches at a private school). I had to work, but since my daughter had no school, I was able to sleep a little later which felt luxurious.

  8. I had today off (teacher in MA) and I actually enjoyed having a midweek day off… wouldn’t want it every time but it was nice this time! I felt like yesterday kinda counted too because I didn’t need to be productive after work. And today I was able to rest/relax a bit but also ran some errands that I didn’t want to do on a weekend. And now tomorrow is already Wednesday… weekend is in sight.

    1. Yeah. I didn’t end up hating it nearly as much as I was expecting. I definitely think being proactive to make it seem “worth it,” definitely helped with that.

  9. Here in Canada, Remembrance Day is ALWAYS Nov. 11th. It’s a federal holiday, but that just means that federal workers (& affiliated workers, such as banks and postal workers) have the day off, so government offices are closed. If Nov. 11th falls on a weekend, the federal workers have the Monday off.

However, it’s not an official holiday in all provinces, so not everyone gets the day off — and there are various provincial regulations around what’s open & closed. When I was a kid growing up in Manitoba (in the 1960s & 70s), EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING was closed on Remembrance Day. It was a school holiday. Grocery stores could stay open, but they could ONLY sell bread & milk, nothing else, or they would face a significant fine. I’m pretty sure that’s changed these days, but I think stores there are still closed until after noon. I was shocked when I moved to Ontario and everything (other than federal offices) was open, and schools in session! Because I worked for a bank, I got the day off, but I could (and often did/do) go shopping! — blew my mind, and still does sometimes! 😉

    1. Wow, that is so interesting. I’ve learned today that federal holidays are not as uniformly taken here as I once thought. I find it really interesting actually. I want to look more into how many school districts around the country follow the federal holiday calendar and how many do not.

  10. $150 for two people is a steal in SF… gah! It’s infuriating (and sadly true). I hope you extra-enjoyed it.

I feel you on the odd feeling of holiday falling somewhere in the middle of the week. It’s convenient that most holidays are attached to a weekend. Makes much more sense.
