Small Wins Recently

The birthday party was a success. The timing of everything worked out really well, even though there were moments that felt stressful. The boys had fun racing at the Go-Kart place. They ate pizza before and cake after, both outside (the weather was beautiful). It was exhausting but it honestly couldn’t have gone better.

Why yes, that is the 12yo on the right, almost a full head taller than any of his friends.

The kids’ shower drain was super clogged. I poured some stuff I bought at Whole Foods of all places down it a few times (the kids were using my shower in the meantime) and then I plunged it and… it’s draining fine now! I honestly can’t really believe it. I consider this a big win actually. Any time I avoid calling a plumber it’s a big, big win.

I really needed something to do with the 12yo on Sunday, and realized Sunday Streets was happening in our neighborhood. There were a lot of great vendors! We got some very cool patches and some fun keychains. Then we went downtown to pick up a shirt the husband ordered for me at Uniqlo. The 12yo and I were out for almost four hours! It was a fun way to kill hours and hang out with the 12yo (the 16yo was with friends most of the weekend).

I found the perfect plain black hoodie to put the patches on at Costco, even though there was no indication in the app that said sweatshirt existed on their site or in any warehouse. I found this perfect hoodie under a pile crew neck sweatshirts, after digging for a bit (a sign said hoodies so I went looking). It felt like I had won the lottery.

I think I placed the patches perfectly, especially the one on the back, which is in just the right spot, and is NOT crooked (I was so worried it would be crooked). I got the back patch sewed on Monday and the front patched sewed on Tuesday. The 12yo’s birthday is Thursday, and I’ll be able to leave it for him to open that morning before school.

How cool is that patch?!
The hoodie is Nike and the patch is covering the “swoosh.” It’s not officially on in this shot, just placed.

My Valkyries gear matches really well with my Halloween leggings. It’s been very easy to wear both this month. Go Valks!

I ran into Target kind of last minute on Tuesday and then meandered over to the costume aisle on a whim and saw that their costumes were 30% off. I got three costumes for collaborative character skits in the spring – a hamburger, a pizza and a trash can. I haven’t gotten new costumes in years and it was fun to finally grab a few at a good price.

Two friends and I managed to see You Can See Everything on Saturday at 5:20pm. The timing was perfect (the 16yo was with friends, the 12yo was thrilled to have a huge chunk of uninterrupted video game time), we loved the movie, and we were thrilled to see it before any spoilers. Definitely recommend if you’re considering it.

I came across some digestive enzymes at Costco that didn’t cost too much and seem to be helping with my ongoing GI issues. I went back and got three more bottles, because who knows if they will ever be at Costco again, or if this is a one off. I really hope they continue to keep the bloat and discomfort away.

The 12yo’s skin has been acting up (as puberty stricken skin is wont to do), and I just assumed it was regular adolescent acne, but then I realized his “break outs” follow the same pattern as my perorial dermatitis. I had an almost brand new pot of Azelaic Acid 10% that I stopped using when I got a 15% Rx from the doctor, and I told him to start using it around his nose and mouth. The 12yo’s been trying it for barely a week and already his skin looks so much better. I’ll be so thrilled if something so simple keeps his skin clearer.

I’ve had Big Little Truths on my holds list for WEEKS (still four weeks to go!) and just decided to listen to Big Little Lies again while I wait. I listened to it ages ago (I’ve listened to EVERY Liane Moriarty book – I ADORE Caroline Lee’s narrations) and watched the HBO adaptation, but thought it would be fun to listen to again. I’m speed listening (1.5x) and I actually remembered the ending straight away, but I kept listening because I kind of love it (the short little interrogation interviews at the start of each chapter are so well done) and it’s been a lot of fun. I hope I like Big Little Truths as much as the original.

The kids and I started Lanterns (Max) and we really like it. It’s less of a superhero show and more of a mystery/drama. We’re only on episode 3, but I’m really enjoying it.

I’m sure there were more small wins recently, but I started this post Tuesday morning and now it’s Wednesday night so I reckon I better just press publish. Tomorrow (today when people are actually reading it) is the 12yo’s actual birthday, so I won’t be writing. I hope you’re all experiencing your own little wins these days too!
