Five on Friday: What’s working right now

Nightly prep. I’m still hanging up my outfit every night. I even hung a hook so it was easier to hang dresses and skirts. Some nights I bring my shoes in, and whatever long sleeves I’m wearing. The fact that I can wake up at the same time as before, but consistently get to school 30 minutes sooner is honestly shocking. It inspires me to keep hanging up my whole outfit every night, even when I really just want to go to bed.

Working out right when I get home. It’s SO HARD to motivate to immediately change into workout clothes when I get home, but being finished by 5:30 or 6pm is definitely worth it. I hope I can keep that up.

Second pair of glasses. I got a second pair of computer distance progressives right before school started. My prescription is almost exactly the same, so I can interchange the glasses depending on what I’m wearing, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have an extra pair that always lives in my car in case I forget a pair at home. No more work days without my glasses! Woot!

Kid chores. It’s only been two weeks, but I’ve been way more consistent about making sure the kids get their chores done every night, even the newer ones that still require some guidance. I REALLY hope I keep it up.

New schedule at school. I’m really liking my new schedule at school. 1st and 4th period preps are nice. It’s definitely hard to have both my difficult classes in the afternoon, but because of some issues with our master schedule, that always happens. Today was our first block Thursday, and I liked it SO MUCH MORE than last year. I get to teach my two 1A classes in a row, then I get a long prep, then I teach the two 6th grade classes, with a lunch in between. I used to hate Thursdays so much, but this year they are going to be so much better.

I got this black cat throw in the Halloween section at Costco earlier this week and I love it so much. Now I just need to get MY black cat on it so I can take a picture. I promise I’ll post it once I do.

  1. I anticipate my hardest class will be Spanish 1, and thankfully- it’s in the morning! Second block. They will be awake but hopefully not disruptive.
That class has 22 kids and only THREE girls! It’s gonna be a doozy.
The rest of my classes are small:
    Spanish 2: 1 section of 14, 1 section of 13.
    Spanish 3 honors: 1 section of 16, and 1section of 23 students.
What is your school doing with smart phones? Are they allowed?

  2. HURRAH for you wins!!!!! I am so happy for you. And thank you for the update. Helps my world.

  3. These are some great wins! Having your clothes ready in the morning sure makes a big difference, right? Good for you!

  4. GAH! I love that black cat blanket so much. But, I’ve realized something very sad- this will be our first Halloween without out black cat Charlotte. I have a lot of black cat decor and I think it might make me super sad. Sigh.
I like your wins. It’s funny how really simple things can make a huge difference. Like- getting a second pair of glasses. It reminds me of the ongoing issue where we suddenly can’t find socks in the morning- every once in a while I just go out and buy a new package of socks (guess what- they’re not expensive!) and how much easier that makes things.
Yay for easier Thursdays! It’s still my least favorite day of the week, but they’re better than they used to be.

  5. Sept 9. Was thinking of you all day today. REALLY hot for SF! Hope your students coped with the weather and your day went as smoothly as the weather allowed. Know you are swamped by back to school stuff. Hope the pressure relaxes a bit soon. Huge hugs and ice cream/sorbet wishes.

  6. Seems like you are in a great groove. Thats awesome. 30 min early? That’s a lot of time saved. Good for you for staying on top of the kid chores too. Hope those habits become routine.
