Smoke Day

Most (maybe all?) the school districts in the Bay Area are closed today due to poor air quality.

I know this sounds like a fun day off, but it’s the last day of my trimester and three of my classes were supposed to take a test, which I was supposed to grade and enter over the break so it would be reflected in the first trimester report cards. Now I have to give the tests on Monday, after the kids have been gone for over a week, and somehow grade and enter them that night so they will make it onto the report cards. I’m so angry at myself for scheduling the test on the last day.

We’ve been stuck inside despite beautiful weather for a week. I had plans to take my kids and their friends to Muir Woods next Tuesday, which will probably be cancelled.

I guess this is the new normal.

  1. I got the notice yesterday afternoon, giving me a chance to get weekly homework turned in to the teachers, but now I’m turning to figure out how to keep 2 kids indoors for the day as that’s usually not the norm.

Sorry about the exam. I’m wondering if there’s a way you can modify it, given the circumstances? For example, I’ve had students do a modified take-home exam, where they had to complete part of the exam on their own prior to the final exam day. Then they came into the exam, and spent that period talking with one another, giving them a chance to modify their answers. I weighted it 40% for the take home portion and 60% in class portion, including group work participation in that final grade (meaning they knew their peers would be counting on them). Granted, this was for a science class, but it helped with the shock of a week off going into an exam.

  2. I do understand it is a problem 4 your students and you.
    Perspective.
Have a lovely time with family. You are lucky to be together despite the bad air from the Butte County fires & losses.
