Savoring December

My belt test is a week from tomorrow which means it’s going to be a busy seven days. At this point I’m nervous, but not totally stressed out. I’m looking forward to being done with the test, because then things will calm down a little bit.

Except then it’s fully December and we’ll be immersed in the holiday season. So maybe I’m kidding myself.

I’m trying not to wish away the next three weeks before the Christmas break. I really like December. I like the lights. I like the decorations. I like the shirts and the sweaters. I even like doing our Elf on a Shelf! I know a lot of people hate what the holidays have become, but I’m not one of them. At least not yet. And I don’t want to wish away the next three weeks just to get to the end-of-year break.

I have to say, today wasn’t a horrible day. And I’m not dreading tomorrow. In fact I’m excited for tomorrow because Brené Brown’s new book Atlas of the Heart is coming out and I pre-ordered it and it shipped today so maybe I’ll be able to start reading it tomorrow. If not, I can wait until Wednesday. It’s nice to have something to look forward. It’s like Christmas is coming early.

I’m actually reading the first Wheel of Time book in Spanish. Yes I’m a poser whose only starting the series because they made a show of it. But I like sprawling fantasy and I found the Spanish e-book on Kindle (the paperback was VERY expensive), so I decided to give it a try. So far I really like it, but it’s long and it will take me a while to finish. Still, it’s nice to have something read on my phone – keeps me away from my news apps. I haven’t opened the NYT or WaPo in over a week! I really appreciate NOT following whatever shit storm the democrats are navigating. And avoiding the sensational headlines about Omicron (I’m freaked out about it enough without click-baity articles popping up constantly).

Tomorrow is the last day of November. On Wednesday our Elf on a Shelf Heart makes her first appearance. On Saturday my kids get their second shots.

I want to savor December. Who knows what 2022 will bring.

Happy Hanuka to everyone who started celebrating yesterday! I hope you have a festive eight days!

What do you like about December?

  1. I like going out and seeing the neighborhood’s Christmas lights. I like when all the shopping is done and feeling cosy at home. I love that your tree is inside and in place.
Sending you good wishes for your test next week.
Hope the three weeks of school are relatively smooth.
Like you am avoiding most of the news on the theory that what is most important will be impossible to avoid.
Hoping the vaccines are effective this time too. Being grateful the littlest in my family is getting shot 2 like your children.
Being grateful inside my home is peaceful and safe. Counting my blessings.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THE ENTIRE MONTH OF NOVEMBER! With all on your plate it is SO Impressive.
